    The current need for performance measurement and quality targets for services to users requires suitable performance indicators for libraries to use. This paper looks at the self-assessment audit tool for catalogue quality developed by UKOLN in collaboration with Essex libraries. For the tool a checklist of errors was drawn up, which can then be used to assess the quality of records within a catalogue using a sample of library stock. The tool can be used to assess the quality of catalogue records for monographs and non-book materials (but not serials), for complete collections or parts of collections and for records created at different periods. This paper describes the tool and the process of making the assessment and reports on the results of the pilot study carried out at the University of Bath Library in 2000

    Radio and X-ray properties of submillimeter galaxies in the A2125 field

    We present the radio and X-ray properties of 1.2 mm MAMBO source candidates in a 1600 sq. arcmin field centered on the Abell 2125 galaxy cluster at z=0.247. The brightest, non-synchrotron mm source candidate in the field has a photometric redshift, z = 3.93^+1.11_-0.80, and is not detected in a 31 ks Chandra X-ray exposure. These findings are consistent with this object being an extremely dusty and luminous starburst galaxy at high-redshift, possibly the most luminous yet identified in any blank-field mm survey. The deep 1.4 GHz VLA imaging identifies counterparts for 83% of the 29 mm source candidates identified at >=4-sigma S(1.2mm) = 2.7 - 52.1 mJy, implying that the majority of these objects are likely to lie at z <~ 3.5. The median mm-to-radio wavelength photometric redshift of this radio-detected sample is z~2.2 (first and third quartiles of 1.7 and 3.0), consistent with the median redshift derived from optical spectroscopic surveys of the radio-detected subsample of bright submm galaxies (S(850um) > 5 mJy). Three mm-selected quasars are confirmed to be X-ray luminous in the high resolution Chandra imaging, while another mm source candidate with potential multiple radio counterparts is also detected in the X-ray regime. Both of these radio counterparts are positionally consistent with the mm source candidate. One counterpart is associated with an elliptical galaxy at z = 0.2425, but we believe that a second counterpart associated with a fainter optical source likely gives rise to the mm emission at z~1.Comment: Accepted for publication in Ap

    Selected sounds : a collective investigation into the practice of sample-based music

    Selected Sounds involves an ethnographic investigation into the sampling and mixing practices of a group of sound artists from Montreal, Canada. Seven composers (in one case, a composing duo) each contributed a single piece of digitized sound to the project. Each was free to submit any sound they liked, with the one requirement that all samples be selected from sources discovered around Montreal. After collecting the audio files, I placed them together on a CD, copies of which were distributed to every participant. Each composer then put together a track drawing on this sample-pool exclusively for source material. The resulting mixes have been compiled into a nationally distributed, independent audio-CD. All were interviewed regarding the evolution of their knowledge of digital audio production methods, as well as their thoughts on audio sampling. In Chapter 1 (the Introduction) I present the research project and outline the theoretical framework as well as challenges addressed. In Chapter 2, I discuss various methodological choices made in Selected Sounds as a reflexive ethnography that invokes sample-based musical practices of citation, friendship and creative production as mechanisms for highly-engaged research in the arts, humanities and social sciences. Chapter 3 presents a literature review of recent academic accounts of audio sampling and the impacts of digital technology upon the contemporary reception and use of media. Chapter 4 introduces Appendix A-an interactive database developed from out of the Selected Sounds interview process. Chapter 5 concludes by taking up conversations contained in Appendix A and organizing them around seven different reconfigurations of the concept "sampling" for 2007: sampling-as-technology, sampling-as-community, samplingas-memory, sampling-as-collecting, sampling-as-ethics, and sampling-as-recording. Appendix A is the Selected Sounds interview database.     VLA 1.4 GHz Catalogs of the Abell 370 and Abell 2390 Cluster Fields

    We present 1.4 GHz catalogs for the cluster fields Abell 370 and Abell 2390 observed with the Very Large Array. These are two of the deepest radio images of cluster fields ever taken. The Abell 370 image covers an area of 40'x40' with a synthesized beam of ~1.7" and a noise level of ~5.7 uJy near field center. The Abell 2390 image covers an area of 34'x34' with a synthesized beam of ~1.4" and a noise level of ~5.6 uJy near field center. We catalog 200 redshifts for the Abell 370 field. We construct differential number counts for the central regions (radius < 16') of both clusters. We find that the faint (S_1.4GHz < 3 mJy) counts of Abell 370 are roughly consistent with the highest blank field number counts, while the faint number counts of Abell 2390 are roughly consistent with the lowest blank field number counts. Our analyses indicate that the number counts are primarily from field radio galaxies. We suggest that the disagreement of our counts can be largely attributed to cosmic variance.Comment: 13 pages, accepted for publication in ApJ

    Maintenance of species boundaries despite ongoing gene flow in ragworts

    The role of hybridization between diversifying species has been the focus of a huge amount of recent evolutionary research. While gene flow can prevent speciation or initiate species collapse, it can also generate new hybrid species. Similarly, while adaptive divergence can be wiped out by gene flow, new adaptive variation can be introduced via introgression. The relative frequency of these outcomes, and indeed the frequency of hybridization and introgression in general are largely unknown. One group of closely-related species with several documented cases of hybridization is the Mediterranean ragwort (genus: Senecio) species-complex. Examples of both polyploid and homoploid hybrid speciation are known in the clade, although their evolutionary relationships and the general frequency of introgressive hybridization among them remain unknown. Using a whole genome gene-space dataset comprising eight Senecio species we fully resolve the phylogeny of these species for the first time despite phylogenetic incongruence across the genome. Using a D-statistic approach, we demonstrate previously unknown cases of introgressive hybridization between multiple pairs of taxa across the species tree. This is an important step in establishing these species as a study system for diversification with gene flow, and suggests that introgressive hybridization may be a widespread and important process in plant evolution

    Leadership styles used by senior medical leaders : patterns, influences and implications for leadership development

    Purpose: Clinician leadership is important in healthcare delivery and service development. The use of different leadership styles in different contexts can influence individual and organisational effectiveness. The purpose of this study was to determine the predominant leadership styles used by medical leaders and factors influencing leadership style use. Design: A mixed methods approach was used, combining a questionnaire distributed electronically to 224 medical leaders in acute hospital trusts with in depth ‘critical incident’ interviews with six medical leaders. Questionnaire responses were analysed quantitatively to determine firstly the overall frequency of use of six predefined leadership styles, and secondly, individual leadership style based on a consultative/decision-making paradigm. Interviews were analysed thematically using both a confirmatory approach with predefined leadership styles as themes; and also an inductive grounded theory approach exploring influencing factors. Findings: Leaders used a range of styles, the predominant styles being democratic, affiliative and authoritative. Although leaders varied in their decision-making authority and consultative tendency, virtually all leaders showed evidence of active leadership. Organisational culture, context, individual propensity and ‘style history’ emerged during the inductive analysis as important factors in determining use of leadership styles by medical leaders. Implications: The outcomes of this evaluation are useful for leadership development at the level of the individual, organisation and wider NHS. Originality/value: This study adds to the very limited evidence base on patterns of leadership style use in medical leadership and reports a novel conceptual framework of factors influencing leadership style use by medical leaders.</p
